A Different Taste of Jesus
“We have attended mass if we get home a little more like Jesus.”
…. Indeed, this was what our retreat facilitator, Fr. Abel de Ocampo, SDB, told us during our Annual Central Luzon Regional Youth Ministry (CLRYM) Retreat held last August 6-8, 2010 at the Diocese of San Jose, Nueva Ecija. Although the Eucharist is a common celebration experienced by the CLRYM leaders, Fr. Abel’s approach to it was different. It was on a deeper understanding of the Eucharist, on why it is the highest among the sacraments and what really happens during the Eucharist. In it we become one with God, the past becomes the present and we are commissioned by God to be like Jesus to others. Aside from that, we were exposed to the different abuses of the Eucharist in other parts of the world, on how they disrespect the sacrament and how they treat the sacrament that we Catholics deem solemn and holy. We were also taught on proper behavior and decorum during the Eucharist and what we may do in our dioceses and parishes to be able to let our fellow youth understand deeper the mystery that is the Eucharist. A lot of questions had been raised, common misconceptions and common distractions. Father Abel patiently answered our queries and enlightened us through his simple illustrations and explanations.
A newer perspective, a fresh take on the Eucharist, a deeper knowledge and communion with God — that was what we were going to bring home with us after our three days’ stay in San Jose that we were positive will fuel us in our journey alongside the young people of our dioceses and parishes. And we hope, by this, we will become more like Jesus.
